Family-focused Approach

A family-focused approach is used since it is fundamental to long-term success of early intervention. This approach does the following:

  • Allows the child to spend time with parents and siblings for early bonding experiences and formation of family memories,
  • Increases the effectiveness of the intervention because the family members understand and participate in the treatment as part of the child’s 24-hour day,
  • Allows the behavior analyst to address the challenges that the family faces during the flow of their typical life, such as a child’s intense reactivity to interrupted rituals or changes in routines; sibling conflicts; nap or bedtime disruptions; eating issues; non-compliance to home rules; and resistance to brushing teeth, dressing or bathing.

Socially Significant Behavior Change

Interventions focus on behavior change that is socially important to the child by using systematic instruction that:

  • Targets behaviors that open doors to future opportunities for the child,
  • Encourages communication and social engagement in all activities,
  • Teaches the child how to learn through observation of others and new surroundings,
  • Enhances generalization by teaching skills during real life experiences,
  • Motivates the child to engage in learning,
  • Builds acceptable behaviors to replace socially inappropriate ones,
  • Empowers the child to continuously develop new levels of competencies.
